In today’s Macworld Apple announced iWork.com which is a new service in public beta that enables collaboration on iWork and/or MS Office docs.  Unlike Google Docs,  iWork.com will  not allow document creation or editing. It is  for reviewers only who will beable to  comment  or  leave notes on  the uploaded documents, or, if so desired, download them for editing.

The announced functionality reminds a lot a traditional document management system, and shows, like in Microsoft’s case, the reluctancy on Apple’s part to move forward to 100% web apps. Quite understandable. Web apps cannot match the Mac  experience yet and, more important, Apple has a big vested interest on the Macs to abandon it for a truly web app.

A full review of iWork.com will follow shortly.
